About this piece

A rocky coastline opens beneath a luminous orange sky, with palms and waterfront buildings framing the left edge and a distant ridge tracing the horizon. Large foreground boulders anchor the composition, while reflected light draws the eye across the water toward the low sun. The contrast between rugged stone and softly breaking surf gives the scene a poised, expansive stillness.

The story

On this December day, the year draws toward its close beneath a sky still bright with gold and coral. Water slips between the rocks, gathering the sky's color in narrow channels before breaking into white foam. Beside the palms, an open-sided shelter faces the sea. The boulders remain in shadow as each small wave carries a little more light toward shore.
