A succession of brick arches recedes toward the lower left, drawing the eye from massive foreground piers into a darkened passage. Warm lateral light reveals uneven masonry and pale mortar, while alternating shadows lend the empty space a measured, contemplative rhythm.

The story

At the beginning of January, light gives the brickwork a warmth that the gray floor does not share. Each arch gathers a little brightness along its edge, then yields to shadow. Rough surfaces and pale joints hold the eye close before the repeating curves carry it farther down the passage. At the distant end, darkness leaves the rhythm unfinished.
