The story

At the beginning of January, the passage offers a measured pause. Light rests on the brick faces, revealing pits, worn edges, and pale seams of mortar. Each arch frames another, drawing the eye farther from the broad pillars nearest us. At the end, a dark opening holds the only space the light does not describe.
