About this piece

A narrow stairway rises between dense stands of bamboo, its uneven steps bordered by rocks and fallen leaves. Sunlight filters through the overlapping foliage, illuminating the canopy in vivid greens above the shaded earth. Repeated stems and inward-leaning branches frame the ascent, drawing the eye toward a small opening in the distance.

The story

December finds this passage enclosed in green. Above the steps, slender bamboo stems lean together, holding the light in a fine lattice of leaves. Below, dry foliage gathers around dark rocks and settles along the edges of each riser. The stairway offers only a little of itself at once, disappearing uphill beneath the canopy.
