About this piece

A jagged opening beneath a brick vault frames a courtyard enclosed by tall masonry walls, with water reflecting their lower courses. In black and white, light picks out the rough edges of exposed bricks and foreground rubble against deep interior shadow. The receding wall draws the eye through the fractured frame into a space of stillness and ordered repetition.

The story

In the first days of January, light enters through the broken wall and rests on the rubble below. Brick edges interrupt the pale sky, each irregular contour distinct against its softness. Beyond the opening, rows of dark windows recede along the courtyard, and water holds a faint reflection of the masonry. The eye moves from the coarse, close surfaces toward that distant quiet.
