The story

In these first days of January, the passage offers a quiet measure of time: one arch, then another, each smaller than the last. Light brushes the brick faces and leaves the vaulted recesses dark. Pale streaks interrupt the warm masonry, tracing irregular paths across its ordered courses. At the far end, a narrow brightness holds the eye while the empty floor stretches toward it.
