About this piece

A succession of brick arches recedes toward a small, dark opening, their repeated curves giving the empty passage a measured rhythm. Strong lateral light reveals rough masonry and worn paving, while the black-and-white treatment draws out alternating bands of brightness and shadow.

The story

At the beginning of January, the passage offers an image of pause: no figures, only brick, light, and distance. Each arch holds another within it, drawing the eye beyond the illuminated foreground. Rough mortar and uneven surfaces interrupt the precision of the repeating forms. At the far end, shadow gathers into an opening that gives nothing away.
