About this piece

A sequence of brick arches recedes toward a narrow vanishing point, framed by the imposing masonry of the nearest opening. In black and white, strong sunlight reveals the pitted brick surfaces and casts diagonal bands of shadow across the uneven ground. The repeated forms give the empty passage a measured, contemplative rhythm.

The story

At the beginning of January, light divides the passage into alternating stretches of brightness and shade. Each arch holds another within it, until the distant opening seems scarcely wider than a breath. Rough brick catches the sun while the vaults gather darkness. The year is newly begun, yet here the eye follows an older rhythm: an opening, a shadow, another opening.
