The story

I paused where the ropes opened onto the beach, drawn to the way the sand carried so many footsteps toward the water. Beyond the grasses, the sun sat low against a band of orange, and a ship made a small, precise shape on the horizon. I kept the path in the foreground, letting its uneven surface lead the eye outward. What held me there was the contrast: all that brilliant distance, reached through such an ordinary passage.
