About this piece

Seen from below, sculpted sandstone walls enclose an irregular ribbon of blue sky. Light turns the curling edges gold and orange, while deep red and violet shadows emphasize the fine striations. Sweeping diagonals and overlapping folds give the enclosed space a sense of movement held still.

The story

On this September day, the sky appears as a blue opening between folds of stone. Light catches a high rim and follows its curve, drawing gold from the surrounding red. Below it, narrow lines run through the shaded walls like grain in dark wood. The eye travels upward through these layers until it reaches the clear, unmarked sky.
