About this piece

An upward view through a narrow sandstone canyon reveals sweeping layers of red and orange rock around a slender opening of blue sky. Light grazes the finely striated surfaces, while deep violet shadows lend weight to the enclosing walls. The vertical composition draws the eye through successive curves, balancing enclosure with a luminous sense of release.

The story

On this September day, the sky appears in fragments between folds of stone. Light catches a projecting edge and spreads gold across its grain, leaving the neighboring hollow dark. The walls seem to gather around the opening, their fine lines bending like fabric held still. Beyond their reach, a narrow blue ribbon keeps the frame open.
