About this piece

An upward view through a slot canyon reveals layered rock walls enclosing a sinuous opening of blue sky. Light illuminates the sculpted edges in gold and orange, while deep red and violet shadows give the vertical composition a sense of enclosure and quiet grandeur.

The story

On this September day, the sky narrows to a blue ribbon between folds of stone. Light reaches the upper curves and turns their fine layers gold, leaving the recesses in purple shadow. The eye follows each bend upward, finding another edge, another opening. Within the close embrace of the walls, the sky feels both distant and near.
