About this piece

Nine bells occupy three tiers of openings in a pale, textured masonry wall, its curved roofline descending against a saturated blue sky. Seen from below, the repeated apertures frame dark bronze forms and patches of sky, while warm light gathers beneath the arches. An arched window at left anchors the composition in shadow.

The story

Late July light settles into the deep openings, turning their inner surfaces gold. The bells hang still, their green-dark metal set against the brightness beyond. Above them, wisps of cloud loosen the sky's uninterrupted blue. The eye moves from the five lower bells to the single bell at the crest, as though following a phrase that ends in silence.
