A Crown Of Light

About this piece

A deeply ribbed green cactus rises from a rounded white pot, its rows of spines and woolly buds rendered in sharp detail. Bright sunlight articulates the fleshy folds and pale rim, while blurred magenta flowers and white surfaces counterbalance the plant’s position on the right. The close framing gives this small cultivated subject a sculptural presence.

The story

Late July light gathers along the cactus’s green ridges, leaving narrow shadows between them. Fine hairs around the unopened buds catch the brightness like pale threads. Beyond the pot, pink flowers dissolve into patches of color, their softness answering the measured rows of spines. Within the white rim, soil and small stones hold a quieter, earthier register.
