About this piece

Seen from below, sculpted sandstone walls sweep around an irregular opening of pale sky. Golden light catches their projecting edges, while recessed folds deepen into rose and violet. Fine sedimentary lines carry the eye through a composition at once enclosed and expansive.

The story

September light enters through a narrow opening, gathering gold along the stone. Beneath it, the canyon walls curl inward, their fine bands following every hollow and crest. The brightest edges seem almost weightless against the darker recesses. Overhead, a small reach of sky gives the enclosing rock a quiet release.
