About this piece

An upward view through a slot canyon reveals finely layered rock walls curving around a slender opening of blue sky. Sunlight illuminates the projecting edges in orange and gold, while recessed surfaces deepen into crimson and violet. The tightly enclosed composition gives the stone a flowing, sculptural presence.

The story

On this September day, the sky appears as a small blue ribbon between immense folds of stone. Light catches an edge, then slips beyond it into shadow. Fine lines travel across the walls, following each hollow and swelling curve. The eye moves upward through the warm colors until it reaches the clear, distant opening.
