About this piece

Mike Gedj frames a breaking wave above a pale sweep of shoreline, contrasting the water’s ribbed surface with the smooth sand below. In black and white, the crest, spray, and trailing foam become distinct textures within a continuous movement.

The story

I watched the water gather into a ridge, its surface briefly drawn into fine, parallel lines. Then the crest folded, and the middle of the frame filled with spray. What held my attention was the sand beneath it: smooth, almost untouched in appearance, beside so much movement. I wanted to hold those two rhythms together—the wave losing its shape and the shore offering a quiet edge.
