Leaning trunks and interlaced branches frame a blue sea, while sunlight breaks through the canopy in a sharp golden starburst. Mike Gedj contrasts the dense textures of bark and foliage with the open water and level horizon beyond.
The story
I stood beneath the branches, looking out from the shade toward the water. The trunks crossed the view in broad diagonals, leaving small openings for sea and sky. Through one gap, the sun became a bright point, catching the edges of leaves while the ground remained dark. I framed the shoreline from within that shelter, drawn to the way so much tangled growth could hold a glimpse of something open.
