About this piece

A pale sweep of sand separates ocean surf from the sheltered curve of a coastal lagoon. Gold, rust, and green vegetation brightens the foreground beneath cloud-softened mountain ridges, while a narrow road traces the distant slope.

The story

From above the beach, I found my eye returning to the quiet curve of water behind the sand. Beyond it, the ocean stretched outward in bands of blue, while low cloud softened the mountain ridge. I wanted to hold both kinds of space in the frame: the sheltered lagoon and the open sea. The fence drew a line through the foreground, but the colors of the hillside carried my gaze straight past it.
