About this piece

Photographed from within a sea cave, the ocean appears through an irregular arch of deeply textured rock. Blue and violet tones fill the shadowed interior, while sunlit spray and turquoise water draw the eye toward the opening.

The story

From inside the cave, I watched the horizon hold its line while the water below it broke apart. Each wave briefly changed the opening: turquoise rose against the rock, white spray crossed the blue, and foam slipped back between the stones. I framed the sea with the darkness around me, keeping the rough foreground in view. In that instant, the cave felt less like shelter than a place to witness the water's force.
