About this piece

Viewed from beneath, the pier forms a sequence of concrete frames narrowing toward the horizon. Softened surf and turquoise water contrast with the weathered supports, while the low sun traces their edges with warm light.

The story

I stood beneath the pier where its heavy supports seemed to gather the sea into a single passage. Beyond their shade, the sun hung close to the horizon, laying an orange path across the water. I framed the repeating pillars at the center, leaving the light room to spread on either side. What held me there was the contrast: concrete standing firm while the water softened every boundary around it.
