About this piece

Photographed from the shoreline, the underside of a concrete pier forms a measured procession toward the horizon. Weathered pillars and sharply defined beams frame turquoise water, while softened surf and reflections on wet sand temper the structure’s geometry.

The story

I stood beneath the pier where the sand darkened with each arriving wave. From that position, the pillars seemed to gather into a single doorway far out over the water. I framed their repetition, but kept the open sea on either side; the structure needed room to breathe. What held my attention was the contrast between the stained, heavy concrete and the luminous water moving freely through it.
