About this piece

An intensely colored sunset illuminates a rocky shoreline, where ocean swells meet dark outcrops beneath a broad canopy of clouds. Large foreground boulders anchor the composition, while palms and waterfront structures frame the distant coastal ridge.

The story

I framed the shore from among the rocks, letting their rough surfaces fill the foreground. Beyond them, a small wave gathered blue beneath the orange sky. The palms and the shelter at the water’s edge gave the scene a human scale, but my eye kept returning to the horizon. I wanted to hold that contrast: the weight of stone close at hand, and the light spreading across water too far away to touch.
