About this piece

Seen from behind, a gull opens its patterned wings above a surface of blue-toned foam. The close framing sets the layered feathers against the softer contours of the water, holding a brief movement in vivid detail.

The story

I followed the bird through the frame as the water folded into pale ridges beneath it. For a moment, its wings filled almost everything, their dark feathers opening against the blue. What held my attention was the small space below its feet, where a thin trail of water still connected it to the surface. I wanted to keep that interval: the body already lifting, the water not quite letting go.
