Mike Gedj captures a surfer suspended above a breaking wave, the red shirt and yellow board punctuating an expanse of blue. Sunlight traces the wave’s textured face while airborne spray creates a luminous backdrop to the figure’s outstretched arm.

The story

I followed the crest as it rose, watching the smooth blue face gather texture beneath the light. Then the surfer lifted clear of the water, one arm reaching upward, the bright underside of the board turning toward me. I pressed the shutter in that narrow interval between ascent and return. What stays with me is the contrast: a small, precise gesture above a wave that fills almost everything I can see.
