About this piece

Dark shoreline stones hold sharp textures beneath a pale veil of moving water. Mike Gedj contrasts the surf’s softened motion with the weight and definition of wet rock, building a near-monochrome composition from reflected light and shadow.

The story

I looked down along the shore, letting the stones fill the frame rather than searching for a horizon. Light caught their wet edges, revealing small hollows and rounded surfaces before the water slipped over them again. I wanted to hold those two rhythms together: the stillness of the rocks and the restless passage of the surf. As the water softened into white, the spaces between the stones became as important as the stones themselves.
