The story

I paused where the leaves opened onto the water, drawn first to the pale sand visible beneath the surface. Across the channel, kayaks gathered beside the wooden railing, their bright colors punctuating the green. I kept the overhanging branch in the frame; it made the view feel discovered rather than laid out before me. Between the crowded banks, the clear water offered a little room for the eye to rest.
