October Over the Weir

About this piece
A broad weir stretches across a woodland river, its fine curtain of falling water giving way to blurred currents among foreground boulders. Soft, diffuse light reveals red and gold foliage against deep green shrubs, while a stone retaining wall leads the eye upstream. The panoramic composition holds the river’s movement within the still framework of rock and trees.
The story
On the last day of October, the woodland opens its thinning canopy to a pale sky. Red and yellow leaves cling above the river, while fallen foliage gathers along the banks. Water slips over the straight edge of the weir, then breaks into twisting white ribbons between the rocks. A small wooden structure rests partly hidden among the trunks, away from the current. The river carries on beneath the season’s remaining color.
