The story

August light spreads rose across the water and catches in the grain of the boards. Along the pier, lamps glow in small, warm pools beneath the broad violet clouds. A few figures gather near the far end, reduced to bright touches against the horizon. The eye follows the railings toward them, while the sea opens quietly on either side.
