A luminous meadow fills the foreground, its fine grasses set against dark conifers and monumental rock faces. Saturated amber tones in the sky and bands of gold across the valley floor draw the composition together, contrasting the delicacy of vegetation with the mass of stone.

The story

I framed the valley with the grasses close before me and the cliff rising beyond the edge of the photograph. My eye kept returning to the bright band across the meadow, where individual stems caught the light against the darker trees. Above them, the rock held its immense, unbroken shape. I wanted to keep both scales in view: the small brightness at my feet and the great walls enclosing it.
