About this piece

Dappled sunlight picks out the striped green globes, blue spheres, and red beak of a bird-shaped garden ornament. In Mike Gedj’s photograph, the radial arrangement sets a measured rhythm against the irregular foliage and deep shade beyond.

The story

I framed the bird where the garden seemed to gather around its feet. Light caught the green globes unevenly, leaving some luminous and others tucked into shade. Through the lens, the blue spheres became small pauses between the larger striped forms. I was drawn to that meeting of deliberate pattern and unruly growth: a creature made by hand, standing among leaves that had no intention of following its geometry.
