The story

On this late-November day, the shore holds a bright constellation of umbrellas, towels, and resting figures. A bather stands in the shallows with a blue board as foam spreads toward the sand. Farther up the beach, striped canopies gather small pools of shade beside exposed rocks. The water advances in a pale, curling line, then thins, leaving room for another step.
