About this piece
Four jets bank together beneath a sweeping canopy of white smoke, their compact formation set against an expansive blue sky. Sunlight glints along their fuselages, while the billowing trails draw a broad diagonal through the vertical frame. The contrast between precise spacing and dissolving smoke gives the image its suspended tension.
The story
On January 2, the year is barely underway, and four aircraft trace a shared curve through the blue. Light catches their wings in brief, silver flashes. Behind them, narrow streams of smoke swell into folds, softening the geometry of their passage. The formation holds its shape while its white wake slowly comes apart.
