Where Stone Holds Light

About this piece

A paved highway converges toward a horizon of sheer-sided buttes and slender rock towers beneath an orange, pink, and violet sky. The bright white shoulder line draws the eye through a foreground of red earth, grasses, and yellow flowers, setting the road’s geometry against the layered forms of stone. Deep blue shadows give the distant formations a still, monumental presence.

The story

Early September gathers gold along the roadside, where low flowers spread across the red earth. The road’s white edge reaches toward a narrow opening between the rock formations. Small signs and distant vehicles shrink beneath the broad walls of stone. Above them, orange light fills the sky while violet settles into the cliffs, and the journey seems briefly to pause.
