Held In Blue

About this piece

A gray military helicopter spans the blue sky, its open cabin revealing crew members above a figure suspended from a hoist cable. Daylight defines the metallic panels and bright red clothing, while the long rotor blades counterbalance the slender vertical line below. The surrounding sky gives this moment of coordinated activity an unexpected stillness.

The story

On this late-May day, blue fills the frame without a horizon. A thin cable connects the suspended figure to the open doorway, where the crew gathers in shadow and light. Red fabric punctuates the cool gray aircraft and the expanse around it. The rotors turn, yet the eye rests on that narrow connection between one person and the machine above.
