About this piece

Two U.S. Air Force jets cross a blue sky in parallel, the upper aircraft inverted above its upright companion. Sunlight catches their white fuselages and cockpit canopies, while red and dark blue markings sharpen the near-mirrored composition. The narrow interval between their tail fins gives the image a sense of precision held in suspension.

The story

The year is only two days old, and the sky offers an open field of blue. Two pointed noses face the same direction, one cockpit turned toward the other across the intervening air. Light glances from metal and glass; painted stars trace the opposing tails. For this instant, speed takes the form of balance.
