About this piece

A listing sailboat rests close to a mangrove-lined shore, its weathered hull exposed above the shallows. The diagonal mast cuts across a blue-to-gold sky, while sunlight traces a bright path over the water toward the foreground.

The story

I framed the boat beside the mangroves, drawn to the way its leaning mast crossed the open sky. Along the shore, roots and stones broke the water into small, dark shapes; farther out, the sun laid a golden path across the ripples. I kept the distant boats in the frame, small reminders of journeys still underway. Here, close to land, the weathered hull seemed to hold a different measure of time.
