Crown of Sparks

About this piece

Mike Gedj brings the flower’s intricate interior into close view, where pink filaments rise from pale bases to yellow tips bearing small cream-colored curls. A shallow depth of field separates these delicate structures from the surrounding wash of coral, gold, and white.

The story

I moved close enough for the flower to lose its familiar outline. Through the lens, the petals became fields of color, while each pink filament held a small yellow flame. I let the farther details soften and kept my attention on the pale curls at their tips. At this distance, the bloom seemed less like a single object than a place to enter, full of branching paths and tiny points of light.
