About this piece

Seen from below, tall trunks angle inward through a fine lattice of branches against a pale sky. A concentrated sweep of red leaves punctuates the green canopy, setting autumn color against the forest’s intricate structure.

The story

I looked up and found the forest arranged around a patch of red. From below, the trunks seemed to lean toward one another, their smaller branches crossing every opening in the sky. I framed the color above them, leaving the rough bark and tangled lines to carry the eye upward. What held me there was the contrast: a canopy still full of green, with autumn already gathering in its upper reaches.
