About this piece

Crimson and golden leaves overlap a quieter ground of brown and slate gray, filling the frame with autumn color. Seen from above, their branching veins, torn surfaces, and curled edges give this dense composition both rhythm and texture.

The story

I looked down and found the season gathered into a single patch of ground. Red leaves crossed gray ones, and yellow held its brightness even where the edges had begun to brown. What drew me closer was not a perfect leaf, but the way each rested against another. I framed the overlapping shapes until the wider landscape disappeared, leaving only color, veins, and the small signs of time working through them.
