Pale thorns project through dense green foliage, their tapered points held in selective focus. In Mike Gedj’s close-up study, luminous color and shallow depth of field contrast the softness of the surrounding leaves with the sharp geometry of the spines.

The story

I moved closer until the plant filled the frame and the space beyond it dissolved into green. What held my attention was the contrast between the rounded ends of the leaves and those long, pale points. I chose a narrow plane of focus, letting one thorn remain clear while the others softened around it. At this distance, the foliage became less a mass of growth than a meeting of light, texture, and edges.
