About this piece

A warm-toned seashell anchors the foreground beneath a broad sweep of illuminated clouds. The softened motion of white surf contrasts with the shell’s defined edges, linking the intimate scale of the shoreline to the expansive sea and sky.

The story

I framed the shell low in the image, letting the sea and sky stretch beyond its small, curved form. Its orange surface echoed the light in the clouds, a connection that held my attention as the foam spread across the sand. I wanted the water to retain its movement while the shell remained distinct. For that moment, the smallest thing on the beach seemed to gather the color of the whole sky.
