A spiral shell, banded in vivid turquoise and pearly white, rests on sunlit sand before a softly blurred shoreline. Shallow depth of field isolates its ridges and water droplets, setting their crisp detail against broad washes of gold and lavender-gray.
The story
I lowered my camera toward the sand until the shoreline became a soft band behind the shell. From that level, its spiral filled the frame like a small piece of architecture, each ridge holding a different shade of turquoise. I wanted to keep the droplets visible and leave room around the shell for the light. The photograph became a study of contrasts: hard edges and distant water, cool color and warm sand.
