About this piece

A luminous band of gold connects the clouded sky, rippling sea, and wet shoreline. White surf crosses the composition diagonally, while shell fragments and rust-colored seaweed give the foreground a distinctly tactile presence.

The story

I framed the shoreline to keep the scattered seaweed and broken shells beneath that expanse of gold. My eye kept returning to the narrow strip of wet sand, where the sky’s color seemed almost stronger than it was overhead. A small wave folded into white foam, briefly dividing the reflection. I wanted to hold both scales together: the distant, uninterrupted horizon and the ordinary things the water had left at my feet.
