About this piece

A broad canopy of orange foliage fills the frame above a dark, deeply textured trunk. Against the pale sky and fine lines of surrounding bare trees, the illuminated leaves give this woodland scene its striking warmth and scale.

The story

I stood beneath the spreading branches and let the trunk anchor my view. Around it, the thinner trees had already surrendered much of their foliage, leaving the orange canopy all the more vivid against the pale sky. A small point of sunlight shone through the lower leaves. I framed that contrast: the weight of bark, the delicacy of branches, and a season still held overhead.
