Mike Gedj’s photograph presents an autumn hillside as a dense arrangement of luminous foliage and finely drawn branches. With sky and horizon excluded, the woodland becomes a continuous field of color, its warm clusters interrupted by pale trunks and deep evergreen greens.
The story
I found myself looking between the bright leaves as much as at them. Across the hillside, pale branches traced the spaces where autumn had already passed, while other trees still held their red and gold. I framed the woodland without sky, letting those different stages sit beside one another. What drew me in was that unevenness: the season was not moving through the forest all at once, but tree by tree.
