Scarlet Radiance

About this piece

Mike Gedj’s close-up frames a red gerbera as a sweep of overlapping petals, punctuated by water droplets and small yellow florets around its dark center. Strong light reveals the petals’ fine texture, while the nearly black background emphasizes their vivid color and pointed contours.

The story

I moved close enough for the flower to extend beyond the frame, leaving its dark center low in the composition. From there, the petals seemed to rise in successive waves, each carrying small beads of water. I was drawn to the contrast between their saturated red and the darkness behind them. In that narrow field of view, a single bloom offered both a bold shape and a world of minute details.
