About this piece

Golden light opens beneath layered clouds, casting a broad reflection across gently rippled water. In Mike Gedj’s panoramic coastal photograph, the dark, slender lines of beach grasses interrupt the horizontal bands of sand, sea, and sky.

The story

I framed the water from behind the grasses, letting their slender stems stand against the bright sky. Beyond the sand, the horizon drew a steady line beneath the layered clouds. My eye kept returning to the opening on the right, where light spread downward and gathered on the surface. I wanted to hold that contrast: the small, tangled shapes at the shore and the luminous distance that seemed to have no end.
