About this piece

A wooden dock leads diagonally toward open water, beside a small boat whose hull catches the golden light. Beyond the foreground, broad reflections and a low, tree-lined shoreline meet a sky layered with blue-gray clouds.

The story

I framed the boat beside the dock, letting the weathered boards lead my eye toward the bright opening in the clouds. Gold spread across the water in broken bands, reaching almost to the shore. The little outboard stood dark against that brightness, an ordinary detail that held the scene close. I wanted to keep both distances in the photograph: the boat within reach, and the horizon beyond anything I could touch.
