About this piece

Backlighting turns the leaves luminous yellow-green, revealing fine networks of veins and the dark silhouettes of overlapping foliage. In Mike Gedj’s photograph, sharply defined branches frame an open center of softened greens and circular highlights.

The story

I looked up into a gap between the branches and found the leaves holding the sunlight. Their veins stood out clearly, while the canopy beyond dissolved into circles of blue, white, and green. I framed the hanging foliage around that open space, letting the darker leaves interrupt the brightness. What drew me was the closeness of detail and distance: a small leaf within reach, and a whole canopy slipping out of focus.
